When God Calls a Mother to Lead: Biblical Truths and Modern Day Courage

June 19, 20254 min read

Hi MumLeader!

When we think of leaders, we often picture public figures; pastors, CEOs, presidents. Rarely do we picture mothers in their everyday routines; changing diapers, praying over school lunches, correcting attitudes, or staying up with a sick child. And yet, motherhood is one of the most sacred leadership roles in existence.

When God calls a mother to lead, He doesn’t call her to be loud or perfect. He calls her to be faithful, available, and willing. Leadership in God’s eyes isn’t about position, it’s about influence. And no one influences hearts more than a mother who walks with God.

Motherhood Is Leadership

Leadership is simply influence. And from the moment you became a mother, you stepped into a role of lifelong influence.

You influence:

  • How your children see themselves.

  • How they view God.

  • How they process pain and joy.

  • How they relate to others.

  • How they dream and grow.

You're not just raising children, you're raising image bearers, disciples, world changers.

Mothers Who Led in Scripture

Jochebed: Quiet Courage (Exodus 2)

Moses’ mother protected her son at all costs. She risked her life, used wisdom, and ultimately helped launch his destiny. Her leadership wasn’t loud, but it was lifesaving.

Lesson: Sometimes your most powerful leadership is in your private obedience.

Hannah: Leadership Through Surrender (1 Samuel 1–2)

Hannah led by surrendering her deepest desires to God. She didn’t just birth a prophet, she stewarded her influence by surrendering her son for God's service.

Lesson: True leadership starts with surrender, not control.

Naomi: Wisdom and Mentorship (Ruth 1–4)

Even in her grief, Naomi mentored Ruth, guiding her with wisdom. She didn’t let her loss disqualify her from leading someone else into blessing.

Lesson: You can lead powerfully even when your own heart is healing.

Mary: Obedient and Available (Luke 1)

Mary’s “yes” to God ushered in the Savior. Her leadership was humble, but history-shifting.

Lesson: When a mother surrenders her plans to God’s purposes, the world changes.

What Leadership Looks Like for Mothers Today

You may not lead a church, but you lead your child’s heart to Jesus.

You may not preach sermons, but you preach love, grace, and truth every day with your actions.

You may not run a ministry, but your kitchen table might be your pulpit and your bedtime prayers, your altar.

Leadership for mothers today might look like:

  • Starting a prayer circle for other moms.

  • Mentoring a younger mother in your community.

  • Creating a faith-filled home culture.

  • Teaching your kids about finances, purpose, and identity in Christ.

  • Running a business or working a job that supports your family and serves others.

Wherever you serve, you lead.

Let’s Bust a Few Myths

 “I’m not called to lead.”

➡ If you’re a mother, you are already leading.

“Leadership is only for women in ministry or business.”

➡ Leadership is for any woman who dares to influence others with love and purpose.

“I don’t have it all together.”

➡ God’s not calling you to perfection. He’s calling you to partnership with Him.

How to Walk in Leadership as a Mother

1. Lead Through Example

Your life preaches louder than your words. Let your kids see you pray, forgive, persevere, and love others well.

2. Lead in Faith

Let your default be prayer, not panic. Invite God into your parenting. Pray bold prayers over your children and speak God’s Word into their hearts.

3. Lead with Grace

There will be days you mess up and that’s okay. Lead with humility. Apologize. Keep going. Grace is a teacher too.

4. Lead in Community

Don’t try to do it alone. Find your tribe. Be willing to teach and to be taught. As Titus 2 reminds us, mothers lead in legacy through mentorship.

For Such a Time as This

Esther was called to lead “for such a time as this.” You are too. God has placed you in your home, your neighborhood, your generation for a reason.

Your motherhood is not ordinary, it is divinely assigned.

Even if the world doesn’t see your sacrifice, God sees your faithfulness. He values your prayers, your leadership, your love.

You don’t need a platform to lead.
You don’t need an audience to make impact.
You don’t need to wait until your kids are grown.

You are leading now.

And when you lead your home with Christ at the center, you’re raising sons and daughters who will lead their own generations with strength and courage.

So, Mama, lead on.
Lead with boldness.
Lead with tenderness.
Lead with joy.

When God calls a mother to lead, He equips her with everything she needs.

Say yes.
